How to create a perfect dictionary for Palm

We believe we know the answer. Any dictionary is a composition of 2 components - a word database and the software that helps You to search, view, edit and store the database. This essentially means that perfect dictionary is a perfect word database plus perfect software.

Perfect dictionary engine

We started with Palm OS dictionary engine SlovoEd (SlovoEd means "Word Eater" in Russian) in April 2000. We developed unique compression technology that makes us the most compact product on the market in comparison with any others. We pioneered several unique features like new layout for small screens and resident modules, which later were implemented by our competitors to remain competitive. We are staying innovative in terms of new features and keep adding new ones to new versions. Retail sales of SlovoEd dictionaries are growing some 25% a month, demonstrating the strength of the product.

Perfect word databases

If You take a moment to search the web for the sources of, say German-English or Czech-German dictionary You might be surprised how fast the "easy result" will fall into Your hands. That's why there are companies on the market offering a range of products from "Swahili-Serbian Dictionary" to "Spanish-English Dictionary" along with another hundred of language pairs.

Offering free language pair databases, found on the web, for the price of commercial or even free of charge is not our altitude. We believe that databases are just as important as the engine. To illustrate this, try to remember how word "surf" would be translated back in 1985 when there was no "web-surfing". Most of "public", "free" and GPL dictionaries are absolutely outdated. Most of them were composed even before World War 2. Now imagine someone, using such a publicly available dictionary to translate a word combination "web surfing" - results would be disappointing.

Understanding that perfect engine worth almost nothing with a low quality database, we're taking serious effort to ensure, that databases used in our handheld dictionaries are up to date, are of high quality and are supported by their owners/publishers. All of our handheld dictionaries contain clear references to the database owners, all dictionary databases are legally licensed and we have all necessary papers to confirm that. Up to 70% of the dictionary price is the license fee that we're paying to our partners.

SlovoEd to satisfy customers

SlovoEd engine allows You to fully evaluate product, using it as a full powered version for a certain period of time. Moreover, for a number of language pairs we have dictionary databases, which differ in size, price, detalisation, amount of words, transcription support and other aspects, so that You can choose one that fits Your handheld, Your budget and Your expectations.

Other Paragon Software projects

SlovoEd Palm dictionaries are one of our leading projects. Among with dictionaries for Palm OS we are shipping dictionaries, based on the same engine for several platforms including Windows CE, Symbian, Palm OS and Casio Pocket Viewer. Also, center of our efforts and attention was and remains on developing of RAM based localization of smart handheld devices, where Paragon Software established itself as a proved leader over last years. We created several hundreds localizations for all popular PDA platforms: Palm OS, Windows CE/Pocket PC, EPOC/Psion and Symbian/Nokia.

One of our divisions focused on developing of plug-and-play handwriting recognition system. Along with core technologies like localization and handwriting recognition, handheld software utilities has always been one of our secondary tasks. In year 2000 a Symbian utilities focused team of division's developers was transformed into Epocware - an independent business unit of Paragon Software Smart Handheld Devices division. It focused on utilities and games for Nokia Communicators (Symbian OS). New direction of our activity is games for popular PDA platforms, especially Palm OS games.

Company focuses its efforts on most emegring segments of handheld software market. Company's turnover grows faster than handheld market*. Trailing 2 years were completed with more than doubled turnovers. Paragon Software is a privately owned company, built and operating without external investments.
